How does the Bravo™ Reflux Testing System work?

Performed under local anaesthesia in our JAG accredited Endoscopy Unit, your Consultant will place a Bravo™ Reflux capsule onto the wall of your oesophagus. The miniature pH capsule is the size of a gel capsule.

The capsule will measure the pH in your oesophagus and transmit the results to a recorder which is worn on your waistband like a smartphone. You’ll then be discharged from our hospital to begin your test period.

I have a question about Bravo™ Reflux Testing System

How long does the test last?

The insertion of the capsule in your oesophagus is a quick five-minute procedure. The test period lasts between 48-96 hours.

Who can benefit from the Bravo™ Reflux Testing System?

If you’re struggling with any of the following symptoms, our Consultant Gastroenterologists may arrange the test to investigate symptoms including:

  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn
  • Pain on swallowing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chest pain unrelated to the heart

This non-invasive method is the gold standard to diagnosing GORD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), removing the need of a catheter. Damage caused by GORD can lead to more serious medical problems such as difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), narrowing of the oesophagus (strictures) and Barrett’s oesophagus so it’s important to get yourself checked.

How does the Bravo™ reflux recorder work?

Your Gastroenterologist will tell you how to use the recorder and how long your test period will last.

You’ll be asked to keep a diary to write down the times when you have reflux symptoms – heartburn, coughing or regurgitation – when you eat and when you lie down.

Is the capsule uncomfortable?

Some patients may have a vague sensation that something is in their oesophagus. When eating, you may feel the capsule as food passes by it. If you experience this, you should chew food carefully, drinking liquids to minimise this sensation.

Can I eat and drink before the procedure?

Yes, you can eat and drink as normal before your procedure.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

You’re welcome to bring someone with you to your appointment so they can wait with you, however, they’ll need to remain in the waiting area during your procedure. You’ll be able to drive and return to your normal activities after your procedure.

How and when will I get my results?

Once the test period is up, your disposable Bravo™ reflux recorder will detach from your oesophagus and pass through your digestive tract.

The information captured during the test will be downloaded so your Consultant can view the results. Treatment options will then be discussed so you’re clear on your next steps.

What is the cost of the Bravo™ Reflux Testing System?

For self-pay patients, the price is £1,995.

Also available to private medically insured patients and Benenden Health members.
