12 May is a day to recognise the work of nurses up and down the country, and in particular our nurses who dedicate their time to look after the patients at Benenden Hospital.
We know that our nurses are working through challenging circumstances, but this doesn’t stop them going above and beyond to deliver skilled care to patients every single day.
Why we love nursing
Jane Abbott, Hospital Director said: “As a nurse it has been a privilege to see the increase in opportunities available to nurses from research, education, management and leadership to delivering clinical care and so much more. Nursing provides you with the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives on a daily basis. No two days are the same. It’s more than just a job, it’s the ability to give patients the care and compassion they need, to laugh, cry, share joy and sadness and to get to know the people you are looking after, something you don’t get to do in other jobs.
“There will be days when you feel you can’t give any more but then the good days will outnumber those times when your heart will be filled with so much emotion because of your patients and knowing you have done your job well. Those will be the moments that will bring you back for more and remind you of why you do the job you do.”
About International Nurses Day
International Nurses Day is celebrated annually every 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Organised each year by the International Council of Nurses, International Nurses Day celebrates the contribution that nurses make to societies around the world.
The theme for 2022 is: A voice to lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health.
Fun fact: The word ‘nurse’ comes from the Latin ‘nutrire’ which means to feed or nourish. Looking after sick people wasn’t described as ‘nursing’ until 1736.
How we’re celebrating nurses at Benenden Hospital
We want to celebrate all the hard work that our nurses put into ensuring the best possible care for our patients. Nurses’ Day is a chance to celebrate what you do, as well as an opportunity to say thank you.
We will be sharing stories of our own fantastic nurses here at Benenden Hospital, who will each have their own story to tell of why they became a nurse and why they enjoy the job as much as they do.
Founded in 1907, Benenden Hospital is an independent hospital with charitable status, which continues the principle of providing first-class treatment for a wide range of specialities.
Rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the hospital offers a wide range of healthcare consultations, treatments and diagnostic services to Self-Pay patients, Benenden Health members and those with private health insurance. Some services may also be available to NHS patients via the e-referral system.
