Waitrose in Tenterden presented friends of Benenden Hospital with a cheque for £485 – thanks to shoppers who donated tokens.
Waitrose stores up and down the country have Community Matters boxes where shoppers are asked to place tokens given to them out the checkouts. Shoppers put their token in the box of the good cause they would most like to support. The more tokens a cause gets, the bigger the donation they receive. Each month every Waitrose branch donates £1,000 between three local good causes.
The friends of Benenden Hospital are called the Rising Mercury Society. They fundraise for the Hospital throughout the year.
Dorothy Flower, Secretary of the RM Society, said: “This is an excellent result for us as it means nearly half of the shoppers visiting the branch during April selected the RM Society as their chosen charity.
“This is no doubt due to a high brand awareness locally and the high regard in which the Hospital is held amongst the local community.”
The cheque was presented to the RM Society at the end of June.
